WORSHIP AT CCSY

Progressive catholic in the Anglican tradition? Modern-traditional inclusive Anglican
catholic? (Huh?) There are many labels we could use to describe the worship (and the community) at CCSY,
though none is adequate in itself. Whichever terms we use,
worship and celebration are at the centre of our life
together as the community of God’s people here at Christ Church. We endeavour to celebrate the life and love that
God has given us with all our heart and mind and soul and strength; and to take this into the world to accept and love
others as we find ourselves accepted and loved. Symbols and ritual are sensual pointers to deeper reality and
mystery. The people
with whom we worship are God's reminder that we are a gathered community. The Scriptures and Sacraments take us
beyond their outward appearances to something beyond; and challenge us to live in ways beyond our own concerns.
We also know that many people each year find their sense of belonging
at CCSY through coming to worship. Many people have said that they have found CCSY a place where they can explore,
feel carried and lifted up by the liturgy, and have a sense of community. There are also people who feel
comfortable belonging on the "edge" and CCSY is a place which values this.
The Sunday liturgies, in particular, are occasions where we are
gathered, renewed, and re-commissioned as the people of God. Each week a large number of people are involved in planning, preparing and leading the liturgy
- literally ‘the work of the people’ - to make it the best we can offer.
Underpinning and uplifting the liturgy is the music, which has its own
section on this website.
Each
Tuesday and Friday during school term, Christ Church Grammar School staff and students have their chapel services in the
church, conducted by the parish clergy. Additionally, one Sunday each term the school and parish join together for the
10am Sunday Eucharist. It is encouraging that these are celebrations which the students look forward to attending.
We
also have numerous baptisms, weddings, funerals, and other occasional services which are important events for
those involved, marking significant moments in the lives of individuals, families, and the community.
For all of
this we are incredibly grateful, especially to all those who help to make the liturgy a true celebration; as the words
inscribed into the chancel screen behind the nave altar say: “Laus Deo” – Praise be to God!

As Jesus said: "Come and see!"
